General Outline of Anderson Animal Shelter’s Volunteer Program

Anderson Animal Shelter’s Volunteer Program is composed of persons age 13+ who love animals and who believe that all companion animals deserve shelter, food, love, and respect. After completing a Volunteer Program Application and attending a Volunteer Orientation and Mentor Training Session, you will be officially considered a volunteer of Anderson Animal Shelter. However, depending on the program in which you would like to volunteer, there may be additional training that you must complete before you can begin serving at the shelter.

The Volunteer Program IS:

For people who wish to complete a MINIMUM of 4 hours of service per month for six months
For people who love animals and wish to improve their quality of life
For people looking to make a difference in their community

The Volunteer Program IS NOT:

For students who need to fulfill community service hours as part of a church, youth,or school program
For students who need to fulfill community service hours due to a code of conduct violation
For people who need to complete service hours due to a court mandated order
Anyone who falls into these categories should apply for one of our two community service programs.

New Volunteers MUST attend an orientation session.
To register, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 847-697-2880
ext. 21.

All new volunteers are asked to contribute $15 to the Shelter. This covers the cost of their volunteer T-shirts and the printed materials that they will receive. If this is an economical hardship for any new volunteer, waivers will be granted on a case-by-case basis by speaking with the Volunteer Coordinator. This $15 should be brought with you to your orientation session in form of cash or check.

Volunteer Orientation

New volunteers MUST register for their orientation session by calling or emailing the Volunteer Coordinator at jpal@andersonanimalshelter.org or 847-697-2880 extension 21.

Orientation sessions last approximately one hour and are held at the shelter in the auditorium. Please plan on being at the shelter 5 minutes early, as we will begin the orientation session promptly at the given time.

New volunteers MUST complete their first hour of volunteer service with an official shelter Mentor. For convenience, a Mentor may sometimes be available to new volunteers after the Orientation Meetings for those who wish to stay and be mentored immediately*. Otherwise, a list of Mentors will be made available at the Orientation Meeting for new volunteers who wish to schedule their mentoring for a later time.
